When it comes to college life, one major aspect is the available food choices for students to eat. The same can be said for Jewish students who abide by a strict kosher diet. At times, it can be very difficult to keep kosher whilst surrounded by aromatic foods, but through the strong sense of community that Jewish students have here at Emory, they are able to get around it. By using social media in order to plan events and get together for meals, Hillel members are able to be a part of a community that supports their lifestyle and religious choices. Many colleges and universities do not provide much in terms of keeping the cafeteria’s food choices available to all diets, but with the help of Emory Hillel, many Jewish students are able to get great kosher food without having to spend excessive amounts.
An important aspect of any religion is prayer. For many students, it is a great concern. Here at Emory, there is a Jewish temple within walking distance that students can trek to in order to attend religious ceremonies and prayers such as “Chabad”. Being a part of a community is important in the Jewish culture and through social media and other forms of transferring information; Jewish students on campus are able to fit into a community similar to the ones they might find back in their hometown. One major factor that highlights the success of the Jewish community here at Emory is the creation of a tight-knit group of students that can meet in and out of religious contexts.
